Leerdoelen At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
1. Describe and explain the major types of industrial
catalysts and the origin of their catalytic properties.
2. Critically compare the performance of different
catalysts in terms of activity, selectivity and stability.
3. Understand the techniques used in the preparation
of heterogeneous catalysts.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the most important techniques for the
physicochemical characterisation of heterogeneous catalysts and select
which techniques are the most suited for studying a given catalytic material.
5. Apply all the above to assess state-of-the-art catalytic systems reported in the
literature in the context of a catalyst development program.
Omschrijving This course is an advanced course on Catalysis that focuses on the design of heterogeneous catalysts finding industrial application.

The course introduces the major types of industrial catalysts, explains the origin of their catalytic properties and the parameters used to evaluate their performance (activity, selectivity and stability). Furthermore, the methods used for the preparation of the most important classes heterogeneous catalysts and the main techniques employed for their characterisation are reviewed.

After having learnt these topics during the lectures, the students apply the acquired knowledge to assess state-of-the-art catalytic systems reported in the literature in the context of a catalyst development program (via the 'synthesis-characterisation-testing' approach).

This course aims at providing a good preparation for a future career in the industry but also at being a support for MSc/PhD research in the field of catalysis.

(The final mark is based on: the report (50%), the presentation (25%, individual and group evaluation), the answers to questions and the pertinence and relevance of the contribution of each student to the discussion , i.e. the questions you ask (25% mainly individual evaluation). The minimum pass mark for each individual component is 5.5. The minimum overall pass mark is 5.5.)

Entreevoorwaarden In this course unit, concepts from different disciplines are used (including organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, separation processes, chemical reactor engineering). However, considering the diversity of the background of the students attending this course, the most important concepts are refreshed during the course or reference is given to books that would help filling possible knowledge gaps.
