Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) explain in detail, using appropriate terminology, how molecular and cellular biology or integrative physiology and behaviour, and/or medical or pharmaceutical sciences interrelate, and use this to acquire in depth knowledge on: - the etiology and pathophysiology of disease and maintenance of health (BMS); - drug discovery, drug disposition and drug usage (MPS); 2) design and conduct scientific research; 3) identify new developments in the relevant disciplines, and can familiarize themselves with these developments; 4) systematically organize their work in scientific research and formulate realistic and original solutions to complex problems; 5) effectively communicate acquired knowledge, insights and skills to others in oral presentation; 6) identify societal and ethical implications of scientific research, and are able to critically reflect on their actions in this context; |
Omschrijving | The students will be introduced to translational research into complex respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD and lung fibrosis. A multidisciplinary introduction into all relevant aspects of respiratory physiology and disease will be provided to the students: in the first one-and-a-half week, clinicians (pulmonology, pediatrics and pathologists) and scientists (biologists, epidemiologists, pharmacologists, bioinformaticians and geneticists) will offer a comprehensive overview of basic lung development, anatomy and physiology; clinical background on chronic lung diseases including the patients' perspective, diagnostic tools and current treatment options; state-of-the-art in translational research and recent technological advances in research, diagnosis and treatment. Students will be introduced to novel drug delivery technologies (devices and particle technologies) for targeted therapeutic approaches. In the second part, students will work in small groups under supervision of experienced bio-informaticians with a large dataset encompassing clinical and gene expression data, define a research question of their interest and perform the relevant analyses using the dataset to answer their research question. Students will use the results from their analyses and the knowledge acquired to design a research plan to develop a novel therapeutic approach for a chronic lung disease. This course will help students acquire the necessary translational research skills to effectively contribute to multidisciplinary research in chronic, complex diseases, also outside of the respiratory system. |

Opmerkingen | Max. number of students: 22. This is a MSc. Biomedical Sciences course unit: see student portal for priority regulations in place. To pass the course both the individual presentation, the average group assignment and the average of the written tests should receive a mark of 6 or higher. The final mark will be calculated as follows: • Average score written test x 0.2 (20%) • Group assignments x 0.4 (40%) • Individual assignment - presentation x 0.4 (40%) Mandatory presence: Yes , Students need to attend all lectures, computer training & data analysis practicals and finish all assignments to pass the course. Absence of a student will need to be repaired in a separate assignment. |
