Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Outline the interaction between the diet, microbiome, and host
2) Discuss the role of these interactions in host health and disease
3) Apply the acquired information to solve research questions/case studies attributed to the topic.
4) Appraise unclear aspects and gaps in the field. Thereby criticize and add to what is known so far in literature.
5) Design experimental research proposal plans by formulating hypotheses to fill in the gaps in the field as a novel aspect
in the field of microbiome, diet and the crosstalk with the host in health and disease.
6) Evaluate the ideas and plans of peers using well-defined criteria together with personal views.
Omschrijving The course aims to acquaint Master students of Nutrition and Health/Biomedical Sciences. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology
Life Science & Technology or Biomedical sciences, are considered to have sufficient knowledge and skills to be admitted to the
course.
Various lecturers from the University of Groningen, University Medical Centre Groningen and from other universities will present most
recent information about various topics in the microbiome and its interactions with the host.
The course aims to
1- Provide emphasis on the host-microbiome interaction with a focus on the link between the gut microbiota, nutrition, health and
disease.
2- Provide multidisciplinary guidance in microbiology, nutrition, microbiota signalling, immunity, and neuroendocrinology.
Targets:
1- Education on the interaction between the microbiome and nutrition in health and disease. This will discuss a- how the nutrient

flow shapes the microbiota metabolites, which in turn drive the cross talk between the gut microbes with the host immune, gut-
brain axis, metabolic systems, b- how to develop therapeutic agents through the manipulation of the microbial community (e.g.

bacterial therapy, probiotics and prebiotics).
2- Training the students how to apply the existing knowledge to look for gaps in the research field and try to design new
hypotheses to fill in these gaps.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge on immunology, physiology and microbiology.

Students have passed an exam with a score of 5.5 or higher. The average (rounded) (5.5) grade for all the above-mentioned activities is the final grade for the whole course. Students’ participation in lectures counts for 10 % of the overall grade. The report, presentation, and practicals count for 90% of the overall grade and are equally averaged in the overall grade.
