Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Critically read, evaluate, discuss and present scientific knowledge provided by lectures and literature
2. Formulate a clear research question and aim, and compose an outline for a written research proposal
3. Write a well structured short research proposal on a cancer-related topic
Omschrijving The objective of this course is to provide master students insight in oncology research, in particular by writing a research proposal
on a cancer research-related topic.
The course consist of lectures, reading articles, discussions, oral presentations and scientific writing. An introductory lecture on the
basic principles of cancer biology and (targeted) therapy is given. Senior scientists will present their specific cancer research topic
of interest. Together with provided scientific literature this forms the theoretical basis for writing a research proposal for a shortterm
project/ (fictive) master research project. Students critically read literature and prepare for oral presentations. Research
questions are formulated while obtaining feedback from the supervisors.
Lectures on how to write a (grant) proposal will help students to write the proposal focusing on developing a research question/
aim, plan of investigation and methodology. Students will orally present the outline of their proposal and receive feedback from the
students and supervisor. During the writing process students will receive additional feedback from the supervisor when required. A
first version of the proposal is send to the supervisor and after corrections a final draft is generated.

(Lectures: 12 hours, Tutorials: 12 hours, Assignment 1 (preparing presentations): 42 hours, Assignment 2: 74 hours (students write proposal). Lectures and tutorials are mandatory. In case of urgent reasons absence should be reported on forehand to the coordinator and relevant supervisor.)
