Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) write an ethics paragraph about their own research 2) review a research protocol submitted to the medical ethical review board 3) give a presentation about how to evaluate and argue accepted, normative scientific practices for conducting research 4) reflect on their own scientific behaviour, collaboration, and practices 5) create an appealing CV including a convincing cover letter 6) synthesize a scientific report into a coherent, logical and informative research paper |

Omschrijving | Research Ethics is defined here to be the ethics of the planning, conduct, and reporting of research. In this course, students will learn about the entire cycle of research ethics in relation to their own discipline with specific attention to technology development. The following subjects are addressed: 1. Protection of human and animal subjects. 2. Collection, use, and interpretation of research data findings. 3. Relationships among researchers with one another. 4. Methods for reporting and reviewing research plans or findings. 5. Relationships between researchers and those that will be affected by their research. 6. Means for responding to misunderstandings, disputes, or misconduct. 7. Options for promoting ethical conduct in research. 8. Awareness that rules change over time and vary across disciplines or nations. 9. Resources for additional study on topics related to scientific integrity, responsible conduct of research, and research misconduct. 10. Writing an ethics paragraph for a research proposal. In addition, students learn how to write a cover letter as part of a job application and how to compose an appealing CV. And students learn the tools required for the preparation of a typical scientific research manuscript. |
