Uitgebreide vaknaam Recent developments in biomaterials
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) present objectives, results and conclusions of recent papers about biomaterial development in a correct scientific way
2) identify common stages of biomaterial development and product validation
3) interpret and review papers with regard to what is needed in new biomaterial development in a multidisciplinary way.
4) to assess scientific papers and argue whether the paper is relevant, new or innovative
5) evaluate scientific papers on their shortcomings
6) integrate components offered in the course lectures
7) propose a research project to develop new biomaterials or biomaterial coatings and select the device classification
Omschrijving The explorations in medical sciences have provided innumerable biomaterials that can perform, augment, or replace the natural function of a defective organ by interacting with the biological system. Biomaterials can be processed to prepare 3-dimensional networks that potentially perform a broad spectrum of biological activities in the absence of the original living tissue/organ, thereby
replacing the problems encountered with the defective tissue/organ and supporting the smooth functioning of the organ and the living organism. Recent developments in biomaterials are devoted to improving their tissue integration and eliciting proper biological functions in a short period of time for accelerated tissue regeneration. In addition, some challenges like biomaterial-associated
infection and foreign body reactions are trying to be overcome by proper surface functionality of biomaterial-based implants.
During this course, you will get acquainted with the complications which have to be faced when developing new biomaterials-based scaffolds. The complexity of developing new biomaterials will be discussed in a multidisciplinary way and therewith chemistry, immunology, cell biology, drug delivery, and microbiology will be part of the course.

A number of scientific papers are mandatory material, these will be provided during the lecturers.
Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from many courses as it is a rather integrating science oriented course. Specific courses:
- Biomaterials 1 (BSc BME or LS&T major BME)
- Biomaterials 2 (MSc BME)
- Surface Characterisation (MScBME)
Opmerkingen Note:
- Students are obliged to show up during the course, they need to show their knowledge about the studied paper and also how they can take part in a discussion.
If students are missing during one of the courses they receive extra appraisals.
- Please note that due to Corona/Covid regulations the above mentioned Teaching method and/or Assessment could be subject to change.
