Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Apply various aspects of membranes, in relation to structure, physiology, polarity and transport.
2. Conduct experiments and evaluate and summarize the methods and results obtained in the practical work and illustrate this in the format of a written report.
3. Critically evaluate the field of international research on membranes and transport to which the selected assignment refers, and illustrate this in the format of an oral presentation.
Omschrijving The course provides an overview of basic functions of biological membranes, and applications in the context of neurological diseases, trains students in practical knowledge in membrane technology and expects students to read and present scientific literature.

Molecular Biology of the Cell (Alberts; 5th or 6th edition).
Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge of basic biochemistry and cell biology acquired from the bachelor programme. The course unit starts at bachelor level given the variability in background knowledge on membranes and transport of the students. The course unit assumes students have prior laboratory experience and experience with reviewing scientific literature and writing practical reports.
Opmerkingen Capacity: A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 students
This course is available for BCN research master students only.
  • The final mark is a weighted combination of 4 partial marks. To pass the course, all 4 assessments must be graded with 5.5 or higher. Grades between 5 and 5.49 are rounded off to 5. Written exams below 5.5 can be retaken. Presentations and reports below 5.5 can be retaken, once but in that case the maximum grade given grade given to the student cannot be above 6.
  • Cellular imaging workshop, conduction of the practical work and assignments are mandatory. Missing the workshop or one part of the practical work without (prior) acceptable justification will lead to an additional assignment set up by the course coordinator, though missing more parts of the practical work will lead to the exclusion of the student from the practical work, including report.
