Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) The student is able to recognize and understand the relationship between the central nervous system and associated anatomical context.
2) The student is able to recognize the main segmentation of the central nervous system in gray matter, white matter and ventricular system (cerebrospinal fluid).
3) The student is able to recognize and understand the cranial nerves, including their functions, and their points of access to the periphery through the skull.
4) The student is able to recognize and understand the main divisions of the cerebrum, including the cerebral cortex and the deep cerebral nuclei
5) The student is able to recognize and understand the anatomy and functional circuitry of major systems, considering both peripheral and central elements .
6) The student is able to understand that adult neuroanatomy is the consequence of prenatal development, and the student knows the basics of the embryology of the nervous system
7) The student is able to recognize and understand the functional anatomy of the brainstem, and the pivotal role the brainstem plays in CNS function.
8) The student is able to understand the concept of structural connectivity, and is able to identify the main central white matter tracts
9) The student is able to recognize the gyri and sulci of the cerebral cortex, the histological layering of cerebral cortex including functional implications of this layering, and the functional relation of the thalamus and its subdividions to the cerebral cortex.
10) The student is able to use correct anatomical terminology to describe structures, their location and their relationships.
Omschrijving This is a stand-alone Neuroanatomy course that focuses mainly on regional anatomy of the human central nervous system, although basic functional anatomical principles are also covered. In this course, lectures and practicals are offered in parallel and the latter include hands-on dissection of the human brain and spinal cord.

(Theoretical: Written test (W) with open questions aimed at understanding of CNS function Practical: Morphological assessment (M) which takes place in the dissection room. This test is aimed at recognition of neural and related structures. Grade formula: (W+M)/2. 5.5 or higher is a pass)

Entreevoorwaarden This course is taught exclusively for BCN research master and PhD students.
This course assumes very basic prior knowledge about neuroscientific principles (e.g. building plan of neuron, synaps, some basic neuroanatomy).
