Omschrijving Part of the training of the BCN Research Master students concerns skills and knowledge that are not specific to neuroscience but important in any scientific career. The course addresses three components in this respect: scientific integrity, writing a grant proposal, and composing a scientific poster. Half a day is spent on scientific integrity. It concerns lectures and interactive training sessions. In addition, an example of an academic and industrial career path is illustrated by the course coordinator and a guest speaker. The training of skills and knowledge to write a grant proposal starts with a lecture by the course coordinator. The relevant aspects are discussed. Students prepare their own grant proposal on the basis of the research topic of their minor research project which, at that time, is discussed between student and supervisor, but which not has started yet. Students use specific NWO-forms for their proposal, which are adjusted marginally with respect to size. Some standard questions which are not relevant in the present context are left out. Each student is scheduled to be a member of a small committee with the task to judge the quality of 2 grant proposals written by other students. Each committee is composed of students evenly distributed over the three tracks of the BCN Research Masters' degree program. Thereby they experience the importance of writing the proposal for a broadly composed committee. They experience the process from both sides: as an author and as a selection committee member. Finally, the best grant proposals will be announced. In addition, following an introductory lecture on how to generate 'An award winning poster", the students make a scientific poster about the aims of their minor research project that will be presented at the BCN meeting.
