Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) describe the brain as an integrative system in terms of functional neuroscience and neuroanatomy.
2) describe and relate the available methods to measure and evaluate brain function in terms of functional neuroscience and neuroanatomy.
3) recognize the several research areas related to and illustrate their relevance within neuroscience.
4) identify and correlate regional brain functions using data obtained from an fMRI experiment.
Omschrijving Subject matters from the book Bear et al (Exploring the Brain) 4th edition .
• Block 1: A comprehensive course in neurophysiology. In this block a combination of neurophysiology and neuroanatomy teaching as well as an introduction in technologies to measure brain activity and function in vivo will be provided. Some lectures are supplemented with additional scientific articles. At the end of the block, students will perform a test composed of short factual questions about the course.
• Block 2: fMRI practical. The fMRI module provides a useful extension on the neurophysiological and functional neuroanatomical subjects of the first part of the course. The goal is to conduct the complete cycle of an fMRI experiment, i.e. from stimulus preparation via data acquisition to data analysis using spm2 and presentation of results. Students will be devided into groups of 4 persons. During the course each group will give two 20 min presentations and write an article describing their experiment and the results.

(Yes , 90% of lectures and practicals should be attended. Upon gross absence (more than 40%) the test can not be done.If the practicals are unsufficiently attended, students need to do a repair assignment.)

(Halfways and at the end of the block I two tests contain open questions. After the fMRI course an assignment is given. Final grade: 70% block I, 30% block II including final report fMRI.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from LS&T and/or Biology. This course is available for BCN research master students only.
Opmerkingen The Functional Neuroscience course in the N-track will overlap partially with the Functional Neuroscience course in the C-track. In the second half of the course, both the N and the C-track students will learn how to run an fMRI experiment.
