Leerdoelen Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:
1) manipulate and explain: the concept and relations between gravitational potentials and mass density distributions; the description of galactic systems in terms of distribution functions; what determines the orbits of stars in gravitational stellar systems, and how to compute these; and to synthesize how these concepts are inter-related;
2) manipulate the fundamental equations in Galactic Dynamics, how to solve simple problems (level of the questions in the lecture book) analytically and distinguish the basic assumptions;
3) write simple codes/programs (in a programming language of their own choice, but Python is preferred) that deal with several specific examples of dynamics of galaxies;
4) be able not just to code, but to describe their results and interpret them, as a way of synthesizing all the material.
Omschrijving Basic concepts: Collisionless systems, relaxation time. Potential theory: Poisson's equation, spherical systems: Newton's equations, computation of the characteristic quantities (circular velocity, potential, force); flattened en triaxial systems (relation between isodensity and isopotentials, disks). Orbits of stars in spherical potentials (eqs. of motion, periods); integrals of motion; orbits in axisymmetric potentials (eqs. of motion, surface of section, meridional plane, effective potential, epicycles); orbits in nonaxisymmetric potentials (2D rotating and non-rotating cases, box and loop orbits, resonances and weak bars). Numerical integration of orbits. Equilibrium and distribution functions: Phase-space, Collisionless Boltzmann Equation; relation between DF and observables: density, velocity DF, velocity moments, velocity ellipsoid. Jeans theorems: integrals of motion, ergodic and anisotropic DF, examples in the spherical case and relation to velocity anisotropy. Jeans equations: spherical symmetry and applications, axisymmetric case and asymmetric drift. Virial equations. Spiral galaxies.
