Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1. Design and present a small research project within the field of marine biology, in a small group of fellow students, and under the guidance of a marine biology staff member.

2. Execute a small research project in the field of marine biology, in a small group of fellow students, and under the guidance of a marine biology staff member.

3. Interpret and present the data of the research project, both in a small group of students (poster) as well as individually (final report).
Omschrijving The course includes a short series of classroom lectures, followed by a research project of >4 weeks. Lectures are given on the various fields of research within the marine biology cluster at RuG and NIOZ, as well as lectures on research design, sampling, analyses and statistics.
Group discussions: Presentation of research plans for fellow students, supervisors and lecturers with discussion of theory, literature, and design of research questions. Poster symposium: pitch and poster presentations of research outcomes for fellow students, supervisors and interested public.
Practical part: Execution of a marine biological research project within one of the Marine Biology Cluster groups or at NIOZ. This is done in groups of 2-4 students, for the duration of appr. 4 weeks. Preparation of a poster on the research outcomes, preparation of final report.

Capaciteit: max. 20 studenten.

The final mark (has to be 6 or higher) for this course will be composed of the project presentation (15%), poster presentation (20%), lab performance (25%) and final report (40%). No final mark will be composed when one of the sub marks is < 5.5.

This is a full time course. Every student is required to be present during all course weeks and to participate in the work of the group. Make arrangements with your supervisor as well as the course coordinator if you are prevented from being present for legitimate reasons. Ensure that another group member performs the tasks you were assigned, to keep the work going! Absence without prior notice will result in a possible fail.
