Leerdoelen The goal of this course is to provide students with a training on scientific and critical thinking in an academical environment, as well as to improve their basics knowledge on various cell biology processes linked to pathologies. These knowledge will provide to the students with important bases to propose ideas on how to link medical research and pathologies to diagnosis and therapy.
After this course the students:
(1) should have acquired the basics on fundamental knowledge in cell biology and their application in medical research, and should be able to correlate new scientific ideas and concepts in research with medical interventions.
(2) can evaluate and analyze a scientific article, and translate it in a "Newsflash" format (oral and written). This will allow them to get the main message out of a scientific manuscript.
Omschrijving Basic knowledge about cell biology is essential in fundamental and medical research. Therefore intracellular processes associated to medical disorders, taking place in the cell are explained and discussed in the context of the development of diagnosis and therapy. The topics proposed cover the role of cell-cell contacts and cell polarization, the dynamic, structure and function of the membrane domains, protein folding, the mechanisms of degradation, the stem cells as well as the use of different experimental models in research. Each of these themes is directly connected to one type/family of diseases including lung diseases, blistering, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Medical insights about the diseases themselves are also provided during the patient lectures.

Design of the lectures:
The lectures will be organized into several blocks with a specific medical theme. During the lectures this theme will be further explored at the cellular, tissue and/or organismal level. The clinical problems will be outlined during the patients’ or doctors’ lectures. Each block of lectures is concluded with a “questions-answers” session, where possible ambiguities can be discussed and where specific questions can be asked.

Setup Newsflash:
In a Newsflash you have to explain in your own words and based on your own understanding the scientific discovery in the article you choose the experimental approach, the importance and the relevance of the study, and the perspective it gives to the scientific field of interest.

Entreevoorwaarden There are no mandatory entrance conditions. However, the course assumes prior knowledge acquired during cell biology introductory courses.
Opmerkingen - Patients/Doctor lectures are mandatory. Missing these lectures without justification, will lead to an exclusion of the student from the Medical Cell Biology course without the possibility to pass the final exam.
- Tutor/mentor Newsflash sessions are mandatory. Missing more than one of these sessions without justification, will lead to the exclusion of the student from the tutor group and to a default grade of 1

Setup tutor/mentor group:
Each tutor leads a group of 10-12 students. The mentor sessions are dedicated to learning how to extract the important points from a scientific article, and then how to present and write a “Newsflash”. Each group session last 1.5 to 3 hours. During the first tutor group session, each mentor gives to his/her own group a detailed schedule of the upcoming tutor group meetings. Each tutor group will have one theme, allowing the tutor to provide further insight into the theme of interest. The aim of this mentoring is, in addition to providing further insight into the theme, to teach students how to deal with scientific literature and how to write an editorial or a 'Newsflash'. The first meeting will be an introduction (plenary), and the final one will be symposium (plenary), in which the best student Newsflash from each tutor group will be presented to all students, tutors and teachers.

The written Newsflashes rate 1/3 of the final grade. The assessment will be based, for 70% on the written Newsflash (on content, language and structure), and for the 30% left on the oral Newsflash presentation. Student have to obtain a 5.5 or higher grade to pass it. Student presence and investment to the tutor sessions will be taken in consideration for the final Newsflash evaluation.
