Leerdoelen  Students will be able: (LO1) to identify the difference between discretetime and continuoustime signals, to solve filtering and dynamical problems related to signals and to understand their importance on systems theory and on digital signal processing; (LO2) to understand and to perform linear operations on signals; (LO3) to do frequencydomain analysis on signals via Fourier and Laplace transformation; (LO4) to do a simple signal processing and manipulation; (LO5) to construct a system representation that describes the relation between a pair of inputoutput signals. 

Omschrijving  In this course, the students will learn basic knowledge on both discretetime and continuoustime signals, and their applications. A number of mathematical theories for understanding the basic properties of signals and for describing the dynamical behavior of a system will be discussed in detail. The topics that are covered in the class include:  Continuoustime and discretetime signals;  Basic signal processing in reallife applications: audio signals, filter, convolution, powerspectral density plot, fastFourier transform plot;  Periodic signals: Fourier series;  Convolution and Fourier transform;  Laplace transform;  Linear timeinvariant (LTI) systems: described by linear differential/difference equations, by statespace equations and by transfer functions.
