Leerdoelen  1. The student can explain, analyse and contrast the different spatial discretization methods to solve the steady convectiondiffusion equation. 2. The student can explain and contrast the different time integration (discretization) methods to solve the unsteady convectiondiffusion equation. The student can carry out stability analyses for various grid types and discretization methods. 3. The student can explain, analyse and contrast the different discretization and pressure coupling methods to solve the incompressible NavierStokes equations. 4. The student can explain the basics of RANS and DNS used in case of turbulent flow. 5. The student is able to implement and analyse the CFD methods in the MATLAB programming environment using basic programming skills. 

Omschrijving  Numerical simulation (CFD) has become an increasingly important tool to study and understand flow phenomena, as a complement to the traditional experimental approach. In the CFD module we will consider the specific numerical aspects implied by the character of the equations describing fluid flow. As a first example the convectiondiffusion equation will be considered; thereafter the incompressible NavierStokes equations are studied. Topics like discretization, artificial diffusion, stability and grid refinement will be discussed extensively. A special application treats the simulation of turbulent flow. The lectures are accompanied by numerical exercises (in Matlab) where handson experience can be gained with various computational aspects.

(There are 5 computer assignments and a written final exam.The computer assignments are worth 0.6 point each (maximum).The maximum score for the written exam is 6.0 points. The final grade is the sum of the two components, plus 1.0 (free).)

Entreevoorwaarden  Knowledge of numerical methods as treated in e.g. "Numerical Mathematics 1" (BSc) or "Computational Methods of Science" (BSc).  
Opmerkingen  The exam is 'closed book'. It is NOT allowed to use the book or lecture notes. Only the use of a simple pocket calculator is allowed. Programmable calculators are not allowed, nor the use of electronic devices (tablet, laptop, etc.). Each computer assignment is closed with an oral discussion and a written report, this report has to be handed in before the deadline. In the report, the students answer the various questions of the practicum assignments, but also include their composed programs. During the discussion the grade between 0 and 0.6 is given. In principle students have to work in pairs.
