Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1. apply the concepts from quantum mechanics and solid state physics to describe and analyze the phenomena occurring on the nanometer scale.
2. discuss, interpret and illustrate mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties occurring on the nanometer scale.
3. relate the properties observed on the nanometer scale to the corresponding phenomena on the macroscopic scale and identify the differences.
4. describe on a basic level techniques to both prepare low-dimensional nanostructures and investigate their properties. The student can determine which technique is suited for studying a certain characteristic.
Omschrijving The course starts with an introduction to nanophysics and historical remarks, followed by a discussion of phenomena which can be explained with classical physics concepts. Before the students are introduced to quantum mechanical phenomena occurring on the nanometer scale, a short repetition of quantum mechanics and solid state physics is done to refresh/introduce the most important pre-requisites for this course. This is followed by discussing 2D, 1D and 0D structures. An introduction is given on how to fabricate as well as characterize these low-dimensional structures. Additionally, magnetic and photonic nanometer scale phenomena are presented. Moreover, one lecture is devoted to carbonaceous materials.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Quantum mechanics and Solid state physics offered in the degree programmes of Physics and Applied Physics.
Opmerkingen The final mark is determined in the following way: Either only by the written exam or by a combination of 2/3 exam and 1/3 problems solved at home (average mark is taken).The mark achieved by solving the problems can only improve the overall mark.
The exam typically contains between 10 and 15 questions. The various topics discussed during the lectures are reflected in the exam.
