Leerdoelen | Upon completion of this course, the student is able to: 1. describe biological processes from a physical point of view; 2. use physics-based approaches to study biological processes; 3. analyze for example cell division, molecular motors, DNA, protein structure and enzyme function; 4. demonstrate awareness of the range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical applications that are based on modern physics; 5. describe selected medical technologies starting from the underlying physical processes via the technical implementation up to the medical application. 6. follow the specialized courses in the Biophysics and Medical Physics track that built onto the foundation laid down in this introductory course. |

Omschrijving | The course provides a general introduction to biophysics and medical physics. The course introduces the main key areas of medical physics: Fundamental physics of ionizing radiation, Biological effects of ionizing radiation and their molecular mechanisms, Radiotherapy, X-ray and computed tomography, Magnetic resonance imaging, and Optical imaging and laser surgery. In the next part of the course, we discuss and analyze the fascinating physics that goes on at the (sub)-cellular level. To do this, we introduce and discuss the properties, structure and mechanics of biomolecules and biopolymers, diffusion, molecular motors and physics of cell division, all complemented by related tutorial sessions. The course ends with student presentations on different topics in current medical physics and biophysics. | ||||||||||||||||
