Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. reproduce and apply basic statistical concepts;
And in the context of basic physics experiments is able to:
2. record data and report in the lab book in a scientific manner;
3. compose a scientific lab report.
Omschrijving This is a truly hybrid course with online lectures and tutorials, and on-campus lab practicals. Nestor/Blackboard is the central place of organization.

The course consists of two parts:

The basics of statistics and experimenting
Apprehension of the theory from the textbook (supplied through Nestor) is supported with short video recordings and notes. The theory is applied making exercises in the Tutorials.

Introductory labs
The labs consist of a series of multiple short (2-hour) and long (4-hour) practicals during which fundamental physical constants will determined. The labs are performed in pairs and each lab has to be prepared beforehand, graded with a Pass, in order to be able to participate.

The following topics in statistics are treated:
reproduce sources and classes of error; apply error propagation to a data set; apply the Gaussian and Poisson distributions to calculate measurement probabilities; calculate basic descriptive statistics: the mean, weighted mean and standard deviation; calculate basic statistical estimators: best estimates of the mean, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean; transform data to show a linear correlation; apply the least-squares method to perform a linear regression; apply the Pearson chi-square test to validate a linear regression.
