Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. reproduce mathematical definitions of all notions studied during the course, such as consistent system, rank, nonsingular matrix, similarity, row/column equivalence, scalar product, eigenvalue, eigenvector etc.
2. prove basic statements of standard linear algebra in a mathematically precise manner.
3. apply major theorems (like rank-nullity theorem) to given instances
4. compute solutions of linear equations, determinant, matrix inverses, eigenvalues, eigenvectors etc.
5. verify if certain basic concepts are applicable (can a given matrix be diagonalized, etc.) to given instances
Omschrijving Linear Algebra 1 deals with fundamental notions and methods of linear algebra from a matrix theory point of view. The first part of the course will cover linear systems of equations, Gauss elimination, matrix algebra, elementary matrices, and determinants. The second one will build upon the first part and will treat eigenvalues/vectors, diagonalization, Hermitian matrices and spectral theory, Jordan canonical form, Cayley-Hamilton theorem, and finally singular value decomposition.
