Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1) describe and explain chemical bonding in organic molecules using the common bonding theories
2) describe and explain 3 dimensional structure and physical properties of organic molecules
3) Name important functional groups and describe their (electronic) structure
4) Predict the product of a simple organic reaction
5) explain chemical reactivity using reaction mechanisms
6) design a short synthetic route for a give organic compound
Omschrijving This course provides basic knowledge in Organic Chemistry for Life scientists, with the aim to provide a basic understanding of molecular processes underlying the chemistry of life. The course contains the following subjects:
1. chemical bonding;
2. three dimensional structure of organic molecules;
3. interactions between molecules;
4. properties and characteristics of important functional groups;
5. important functional group transformations;
6. mechanisms of these reactions;
7. application of these reactions for the design of a small multi-step synthesis of a given molecule.
These topics will be taught in the context of biomolecules and chemical reactivity in biology.
