Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
  1. Set-up an appropriate design goal within an adequate design framework, with constraints and planning related to sustainable development, embedded in the system thinking approach
  2. Apply analytical methods for diagnosis and to determine the sustainable performance of the design outcome. Methods include Life Cycle Assessment, building sets of scenarios, stakeholder analysis and innovation stages

Omschrijving The course unit Sustainable Engineering Design relates daily engineering practice to the conditions and goals of sustainable development. Currently technology development almost always includes elements of Triple P assessment: People (socially acceptable), Planet (environmentally friendly) and Prosperity (economically viable). This added complexity requires a specific palette of knowledge and methods, such as key issues in sustainable development, thorough long-term view, life cycle assessment and a balanced professional personal assessment.

A sustainable engineering design protocol directs the group case work in the course unit. Online modules enable self-study of knowledge areas and specific skills, such as sustainable system design, derive sustainable performance indicators, and perform life cycle analysis, structured decision making and building sets of scenarios. Key issues are the role of internal and external stakeholders, benchmarking of companies on sustainability, application of a holistic approach and differences in industrial areas. Assessment is on group work and individual performance.
