Leerdoelen | With real life cases, Design Science explores the application of IEM methodology. In this respect, Design Science is the bridge between Research and Design Methodology and the IEM Bachelor graduation project (Bachelor Integration Project, Ba IP). After successful completion, the student should be able to 1. Identify the main methods of key IEM research and design topics 2. Define typical IEM industrial or societal fields of application 3. Formulate possibilities of design science for design and research topics 4. Interpret and draw conclusions from expert literature on a typical IEM topic 5. Define an adequate Research and Design Plan (RDP) for IEM Bachelor Integration Project 6. Explain and defend research and design choices, as proposed in the RDP 7. Provide an on-level reporting and presentation in English |

Omschrijving | Design Science explores the application of IEM methodology using real life projects. In this respect, Design Science is the bridge between Research and Design Methodology and the IEM Bachelor graduation project. Design Science is coupled to the BSc IP and will be scheduled twice a year (semester 1 and 2). The set-up of Design Science is with three separate parts, each with specific requirements to pass: 1. IEM Methods and Application Review, in group work (groups of three), in which students: a) Identify key methods and application for a typical IEM research field, in which both an empirical approach and a problem solving/design approach are in scope, and b) define rudimentary research design to set-up a design science approach, that both deliver a design and generate general applicable knowledge. The first part should be satisfactorily passed in order to individually get access to part 2: 2. Set-up a Research and Design Plan for the IEM Bachelor Integration Project. Students select their Ba IP topic and perform a RDP, based on the knowledge and skills acquired in Research and Design Methodology (RDM), a prerequisite for the Design Science. The results of RDP are presented and defended in a panel discussion. The second part (and thus the first part) needs to be sufficient to continue with the Ba IP, and therefore is Go/No Go decision. In case of No Go, all parts of Design Science has to be repeated in the next occasion. 3. The workshops on English, writing and presentation, summarise key issues in English proficiency and command, applied to the Ba IP work, and therefore situated (and only available) during the Ba IP execution phase. The third part should be on an adequate level in order to pass Design Science. |

Practisch werk (PR), Presentatie (P), Verslag (R)
(R1 33%, R2, 34%, R3 16%, P 17%. The set-up of Design Science is with three separate parts, each needs to be passed to receive a final Pass for the course) |

Entreevoorwaarden | Design Science is coupled to the Ba IP and therefore has the same entry requirements: -Successful completion of Research and Design Methodology (WBIE015-05). -Registration of at least 140 ECTS in Progress of the study programme IEM. -The propaedeutic phase has successfully been completed. -The Bachelor study programme has to be submitted to the Board of Examiners and applied for approval of the study programme. -Due to the coupling of both courses, you should also be enrolled in WBIE902-15 or WBIE901-15 Integration Project IEM (PTL/SPE) If you do not meet these entrance requirements you have to quit Design Science and restart next semester. |

Opmerkingen | The majority of activities in this course are scheduled in the first half of the semester (1a or 2a). Part three, with application in the Bachelor Integration Project will partly take place in the second half of the semester (1b or 2b). This course was previously registered with course code WBIE18002 |
