Leerdoelen  After succesful completion of the course, the student is able to:


Omschrijving  In this course, basic concepts and skills in the area of linear algebra are discussed. Linear algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning linear equations, linear functions and their representation in vector spaces and through matrices. The first part of the course is concerned with existence and uniqueness of solutions of systems of linear equations together with their representation as matrixvector products and how to work with matrices in general. Afterwards, the abstract notion of a vector space is introduced including the concepts of linear (de)pendence, bases and their transformations. The eigenvalue problem of matrices is introduced and the relevance for the solutions of linear differential/difference equations is investigated. Finally, the abstract notions of normed and inner product spaces are defined and methods for calculating distances between points, lines and planes are introduced. Most of the presented methods of this course will additionally be implemented and tested in Matlab.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course assumes basic mathematical skills (BMS) as well as familiarity with complex numbers. The final written exam (FWE) will determine the final grade (FG). In order to pass the course, the following additional assessments needs to be passed: midterm written exam (MWE), homework assignments (HW), computer practicals (C) and a presentation of a solution during the tutorials (P). The resit exam can only be used to improve the grade for FWE; in particular, MWE, HW, C and P each need a passing grade to pass the course even after a successful resit. If one or more of the prerequisites (MWE, HW, C and P) are not satisfied, there will be a possibility to repair those. For more details see Brightspace.
