Leerdoelen At the end of course students can:
1. distinguish the pathogenesis of different bacterial, viral and fungal infections (see description);
2. describe the working mechanism, important clinical applications, side effects and pharmacokinetic aspects of classes of drugs used to treat infectious diseases and tumours.
3. recognise the chemical structure of the major classes of drugs used to treat infectious diseases and tumours.
4. choose a course of treatment for common infectious diseases and cancers by weighing advantages and disadvantages of chemotherapeutics in light of pathogenesis and patient history.
5. discuss the problem of drug resistance with respect to treatment of infectious diseases and explain the policies in place in hospitals and pharmacies to prevent and minimise occurrence of resistances.
6. describe the use of immunopharmacological drugs to treat autoimmune diseases and cancer.
Omschrijving In this course, students learn about the way tumours and infections develop and explore various options for treating them. Infections include bacterial, fungal, viral, protozoan and worm infections. The course unit will deal with the working mechanism and clinical application of various cytostatics, antibiotics, antimycotics, antiviral, antiparasitic, and immunosuppressive drugs, linking these aspects to the chemical structure, pharmacokinetic properties and side effects of the drugs studied. The clinical application of drugs will be illustrated by studying various diseases such as systemic infections (sepsis), AIDS, and certain malignant tumours. Modern production methods for the foremost antibiotics will also be demonstrated. In addition, the course unit will examine the problem of resistance and various other factors determining the decision to use a particular drug, as well as the latest developments in the area of anti-bacterial, anti-viral, immunosuppressive and anti-tumour therapies.
