Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. To explain the basic principles of drug-receptor interaction in various cellular and subcellular systems in relation to main and potential side effects.
2. To describe and compare the function of various brain regions and understand how drugs act on these regions and elicit their effects
3. To describe and explain the mechanisms of action of current therapeutic options for brain diseases
4. To explain the molecular mechanisms through which drugs acting on the central nervous system have their side effects.
5. Learning outcomes skills and training: Critical interpretation and written presentation of the lecture material.
Omschrijving The course provides information on the pharmacology of drugs acting on the central nervous system (CNS). Several brain pathologies are discussed as well. In this course unit, students will get in depth knowledge in underlying mechanisms that play a role in our brain in healthy and in pathological situations.
The following topics will be addressed in this course unit:
- neuroanatomy and related brain functions
- basic function of neurotransmission
- human models to study brain diseases, with an emphasis on imaging techniques
- pharmacology of drugs acting on cholinergic, serotonergic, dopaminergic system (with a focus on brain neurotransmitter pathways)
- molecular pathways and mechanisms of action of drugs used for neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer' s disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke), multiple sclerosis, migraines
- mechanisms of action of hallucinogenic substances, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, anticonvulsants and centrally acting analgesics
