Leerdoelen LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Students will be familiar with the various metabolic transformations that drugs can undergo and will have an understanding of the internal and external factors which affect those transformations.
- Students will be familiar with interactions, species differences, the different methods of examining metabolism, and the connection between metabolism and toxicity.
- Students will be familiar with basic toxicological concepts, toxicokinetics, the underlying biochemical mechanisms and some manifestations of drug toxicity.
- Students will be aware of the research that is carried out during the development of new drugs relating to metabolism and toxicology.
- Students will be able to conduct a few experiments relating to metabolism and toxicology and to process and interpret the results.
- Students will gain experience with in vitro tests as an alternative to in vivo animal testing and will be able to give reasons for this choice.
Omschrijving To gain understanding and knowledge relating to metabolism and drug toxicology. Students are expected to be able to apply knowledge of the following subjects to answer the questions asked in the examination and to conduct some practical tests and to interpret the results of those tests.
Introduction to drug toxicology, dose-effect relationship and toxicokinetics.
Drug metabolism, the enzymes involved, interactions through induction and inhibition, bioactivation, polymorphism.
Biochemical mechanisms of toxicity, target organ toxicology (liver, kidney, heart and nervous system) genetic toxicity, carcinogenesis, reproductive toxicology and biomarkers of toxicity.
Toxicology and safety research in practice in the pharmaceutical industry.
To make a contribution to the learning outcomes of the Bachelor’s degree program in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, specifically 1,a,b,c,d,e,f and i.

(Het tentamen bestaat uit open vragen (telt voor 35% mee) en meerkeuzevragen (telt voor 65% mee). De practicumbeoordeling bestaat uit voorbesprekingen, voorbereidingsvragen, de uitvoering van de experimenten, groepsverslagen en een individueel verslag. Opmerkingen -The mark for the practical will be based on an assessment of the observed standard of preparation for and execution (including work attitude) and processing of the experiments. (including oral and written presentation)
-The written examination will consist of a multiple-choice component and some open questions.
The final mark will be based on the marks for theory (2/3) and the practical (1/3). ECTS credit points (5 ECTS) will be allocated when a student has passed both the theory and the practical.
