Leerdoelen Theoretical part: At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. describe (and draw simple examples of) structures, chemical properties, and role of the most important classes of biomolecules: DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates
2. describe and explain the mechanism of transcription and translation
3. recognize the main forces of interaction between biomolecules
4. describe the kinetics and thermodynamics of enzym catalysed reactions
5. make simple calculations on the kinetics of enzymes and the thermodynamics of biologically relevant reactions
6. analyze sequences and structures of biomolecules
7. describe the binding of small molecules to proteins, and explain and interpret the consequences of the concept of allostery

Learning objectives (practical):
1) Know the general principles of biochemical techniques.
2) Apply basic biochemical techniques.
3) Analyze data and report.
Omschrijving The course provides insight in the chemical basis of life. Biology often looks overwhelmingly complex through the eyes of chemists, but the underlying chemical and physical concepts are surprisingly simple. The course will teach students which macromolecules constitute life, and how the interplay between them forms the basis of life. Apart from teaching the theoretical background in biochemistry, the course also introduces a number of essential biochemical experimental techniques.
The course is based on the book Biochemistry (Berg et al., 9th edition). It explores the function and mechanism of essential biomolecules, covering DNA, RNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. There will be emphasis on (1) the mechanism of transcription & translation, and (2) the structure & function of proteins. Furthermore, several experimental techniques will be explained.

In the practical part students will learn essential techniques to work in a biochemical laboratory. The practical makes students familiar with different biochemistry techniques, and let the students apply basic biochemistry principles. The students will design and perform necessary experiments to apply the biochemistry principles and techniques, analyze the data and present it in the form of a practical report.

Opmerkingen Practicum grade is 40% of the final grade.
(Practicum grade is: 50% lab performance, 35% report, 15% notebook/lab journal evaluation)
For both parts (exam, practicum) the grade should be minimal 5.5.

Mandatory attendance:
All students must be present for all scheduled laboratory time. Multi-day illnesses and similar circumstances are handled on a case-by-case basis by the coordinator of the practical (dr. E. Jurak).
