Uitgebreide vaknaam Maths for Chemistry and Engineering
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.
Solve simple (high-school level) mathematical problems involving algebraic expressions and basic functions.
2.
Calculate limits using the limit laws and l'Hospital's rule.
3.
Calculate derivatives and Taylor approximations with the help of differentiation rules and knowledge of the derivatives of basic functions.
4.
Calculate the extreme values of functions.
5.
Investigate the graphs of simple real-valued functions.
6.
Apply the standard techniques of integration (substitution rule, integration by parts, trigonometric integrals and substitutions, integration of rational functions by partial fractions).
7.
Solve simple problems involving complex numbers (compute the value of expressions and solve equations).
8.
Solve separable and linear first-order differential equations.
9.
Solve homogeneous and non-homogeneous second-order linear differential equations with constant coefficients.
Omschrijving 1. The main focus of this course will be on real functions f(x) of a real variable x. We will treat the following subjects: continuity, limits, differentiation, graph drawing, optimization, integration, complex numbers, and first and second order differential equations.
2. Besides the computational aspects, there is also attention to the applications of the treated techniques to Chemistry.

Opmerkingen Assessment:
Final written exam with open questions. The exam is marked out of 100%. A score of >55% is required to pass the exam and the course.

Bonus 1: if the mid term grade is 10% greater than score in the final exam (which is itself greater than 5.5) then the final grade is increased by 0.5
Bonus 2: if the BST grade is 10% greater than score in the final exam (which is itself greater than 5.5) then the final grade is increased by 0.5
The maximum final grade is in all cases 10.
