Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
prepare the experiment / detailed experimental plan (in lab journal) & prepare the experiment / complete safety preparation & risk assessment (in lab journal)
work in an academic chemical according to the rules and habits, with a focus on the following essential elements: planning, performing and reporting about an experiment, keeping a notebook, working safely and handling waste properly.
perform basic manual quantitative, qualitative and instrumental chemical analyses accurately, using prescribed laboratory procedures
apply basic mathematical, physical, and chemical concepts to routine tasks such as the analysis and synthesis of chemical compounds and samples
apply basic computer skills relevant to the chemical laboratory technology field.
theoretically describe, to prepare and to process various polymeric compounds using standard chemical synthetic and purification procedures and technological approaches
use interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to the chemical laboratory technology environment.
report about the quantitative/qualitative results of the experiment (in lab journal and report)
perform routine statistical calculations to report the results of analyses (in lab journal and report)
discuss and conclude the experiment (perform calculations, relate results to hypotheses, perform error analysis and suggest improvements) (in lab journal and report)
Omschrijving The aim is to learn experimental techniques in polymer chemistry.
The following will be addressed in the practical:
1. Polycondensation reaction as well as characterization of the obtained polymers
2. Radical emulsion copolymerization with order conversion, copolymerization incorporation and determination of molecular weights
3. Processing of polymers in a melting machine with roller, injection moulding machines, and optionally extruders
4. Determination of E-modulus, tensile strengths, Tg and Tm values.

The lab materials
Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry 2 and requires all previous lab modules from the degree programme (minimum final grade obtained = 6).

Entry requirement = Having followed Macromolecular Chemistry (CHMMC-11) with success as proven by a minimum grade of 6 on the mandatory presentation and a minimum grade of 4 on the midterm exam.
Opmerkingen The two discussion (pre-talk of the lab course (safety issues)&discussion after the lab course(discuss lab journals and reports and therefore asses the knowledge acquired during the lab work)sessions denominate 20 % of the total grade.The quality of the lab report accounts for 60% of the total grade.The practical work during the lab course is assessed and denominates to 20 % of the total grade.

Mandatory attendance:
  • introduction meeting - consequences for missing -> student is not allowed to participate
  • lab hours - consequences for missing -> fail the course
