Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.use common techniques and skills, such as purification, analysis and characterisations of the final products, to perform organic reactions.
2.demonstrate that he/she can work according to the rules and safety regulations in an organic chemistry laboratory.
3.perform multistep synthetic routes, analyse the results and solve any problems encountered during the experiments.
4.write reports in a concise and clear way, using the appropriate style for chemistry experiments as provided in the course.
5.conduct experiments using the information from Organic Chemistry 1.
6.carry out a short research project and propose new ideas and directions for the research project performed.
Omschrijving The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the main techniques used within an organic laboratory and to apply these techniques to carry out organic reactions taught in Organic Chemistry 1 (Author: Vollhardt). The course is divided into three weeks. The first week is designed to introduce experimental techniques covering an important section of organic chemistry. The second week continues with introducing experimental techniques involved in more complex and multistep organic reactions. In the final week, students will do a short research project using the knowledge accumulated during the first two weeks to experience a real research environment. Within these three weeks, all the experiments and research project have to be completed, answers to the associated questions have to be given, and reports have to be written after each experiment as well as the research project.

A rubric will be generated during the course of the practical taking into account any incidental circumstances.

The course unit is often followed by, or prepares students for “Biochemistry lab course”, “Spectroscopy”, “Organic Chemistry 2” and “Synthesis 2 Lab Course” from the “BSc Chemistry” degree programme in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
