Leerdoelen At the end of the course the sudent will be able to:
"1. recognize and reproduce the molecular structures of the most commonly found carbohydrates"
"2. recognize and reproduce a set of protecting groups commonly used in carbohydrate chemistry, including reaction conditions and mechanisms for their introduction and removal"
"3. describe and rationalize the reactivity of different carbohydrate substituents, and exploit these reactivity differences in the design of a regioselective protection strategy"
"4. propose reaction mechanisms for the different glycosylation reaction conditions, and rationalize the stereoselective outcome of the reactions in terms of the stability of intermediates"
"5. design the carbohydrate building blocks needed to produce a certain oligosaccharide, and propose reaction conditions"
"6. reproduce the reaction mechanisms of glycosyl transferase and glycosyl hydrolase enzymes"
"7. describe the structures of natural glycans and their involvement in health and disease, and describe and design common experimental methods to investigate them"
Omschrijving In this course a number of topics in organic chemistry and molecular reactivity that relate to carbohydrates will be discussed. The course will serve as an introduction to understand the structure and reactivity of different carbohydrates, and how this affects their natural production and biological function.

At the end this course, the students will have acquired a good working knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry and molecular reactivity, with a specific focus on the chemistry of carbohydrates. In particular a firm understanding of reaction mechanisms involving carbohydrates, both in a chemical and enzymatic reaction. Moreover, an appreciation of the structural complexity of natural sugars, and their impact on biological processes will be obtained.
