Leerdoelen  At the end of the course: 1. Students will be able to enumerate the properties of atoms and quantitatively using conservation of mass, Dalton’s theory, Avogadro’s number, isotopes, and density in order to write down and interpret empirical formulas, write a balanced chemical equation and determine limiting reagents. 2. Students will be able to elucidate the relative properties of elements based on their position in The Periodic Table to calculate the parameters of a chemical bond between two atoms using classical mechanics. 3. Students will be able to extend classical mechanics by using quantization to derive the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom and use solutions to the Schrödinger equation to describe Hartree orbitals numerically. 4. Students will be able to use the laws of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to describe thermochemical reactions quantitatively. 5. Students will be able to use basic rate laws to determine the rates of reactions as a function of temperature separately from the thermodynamic descriptions including for rudimentary reactions in biological contexts. 6. Students will be able to common simulation software to test predictions of chemical shifts based on electronegativity and simulate mass spectra. 

Omschrijving  This is the first course in the Bachelor's program in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The goal is to expose students to the scientific discipline of Chemistry in a broad sense and to introduce them to core concepts that they will build on in both the downstream Chemistry and Chemical Engineering curricula. After a refresher on the Elements, the structure of atoms and molecular formulas, the course will cover: The Periodic Table, chemical bonding, redox, the ideal gas law and mixtures of gases, intermolecular forces, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, Gibbs free energy, entropy, and chemical kinetics. Computer practical courses will introduce NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and chemical kinetics in a biological context. This course closely follows six chapters from a text book. (The publisher has prepared a special text book containing only these chapters that is much less expensive than the full book.) The learning objectives are organized by chapter, each of which focuses on sets of closely related concepts that, together, form a learning objective.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from high school chemistry. The course unit is prepares students for the degree program in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. 

Opmerkingen  The final mark is determined from the maximum possible score using variablyweighted combinations of homework, the midterm and the final (re)exam grades normalized to a scale of 110 and rounded to the nearest 0.5. Grades are rounded arithmetically except when the practical work is below or above average, in which case it is rounded down or up respectively. The final exam will cover the entire contents of the course, but with an emphasis on the contents covered after the midterm exam. It counts for 6080% of the final grade. The practicals are assessed on a pass/fail basis determined by completing and handing in the assigned work and affects how the final grade is rounded. Homework assignments: Solve problems as practiced in tutorials. It is worth 020% of the final grade. This course was registered last year with course code WPCH16000
