Leerdoelen  At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. Design process control systems and control loops for chemical processes 2. Derive the input (forcing function/disturbance) and output (timedomain response) of a control system 3. Differentiate between "open loop" and "closed loop" control systems 4. Distinguish between cascade, feedforward and feedback control systems 5. Utilize the aforementioned tools to solve examples on linear openloop control systems relevant to chemical engineering processes (Only 1st and 2nd order systems will be covered) 6. Use MATLAB/SIMULINK software (control tool box) to obtain the response and transfer function of a control system in addition to constructing a detailed control block diagram 

Omschrijving  The course is a core course that is relevant to 3rd year Chemical Engineering students. The course will cover the following topics in Process Dynamics and Control: (1) Design of simple control systems for chemical processes (Feedback, Feed forward & Cascade) (2) Using mathematical tools, such as La Place Transform and Inversion by partial fractions to solve ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for physicochemical systems to determine transfer functions and responses for potential chemical processes. (3) Differentiate between "open loop" and "closed loop" control systems (4) Distinguish between cascade, feedforward, and feedback control systems (5) Physical examples on linear open loop control systems (1st and 2nd order systems will only be covered) (6) Students will get familiar with MATLAB/SIMULINK software to determine transfer functions and dynamic responses (7) Servo (Set point tracking) and Regulator (Disturbance rejection) Problems (7) Design of PID controllers (8) Stability of Control Systems (9) Types of Measuring elements used in the industrial chemical plants (e.g. level indicators, thermocouples,...), Controllers (e.g. PIDs), transducers and control valves.

Entreevoorwaarden  This course is a 3rd year BSc course that is offered for chemical engineers. The course assumes prior knowledge in the following areas: (1) Fundamental mathematics (Calculus), differential and integral calculus, Partial Fractions and Algebraic equations (2) Ability to perform Mass, Energy & Momentum Balances for Chemical Processes 

Opmerkingen  Attending only the first Lecture is MANDATORY and tutorials attendance is also highly recommended unless there is an emergency or valid reason that would prevent the student from attending. In case there is a valid reason, the student needs to inform the course instructor (for the first lecture) or the teaching assistant (for the tutorials. In order for the students to successfully pass the course, the practical grade needs to be 6 or higher, as per university policy and regulations. A 6/10 is a pass. The attendance of the final exam is compulsory to pass the course.
