Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. recognize the most important feedstocks for and modes of operation of the chemical industry as well as major intermediates and their applications (knowledge) 2. identify the main functional groups present in organic molecules and explain their reactivity using reaction mechanism and basic physical organic chemistry principles (knowledge/comprehension) 3. apply the reaction coordinate theory to basic organic reactions (application) 4. suggest plausible simple synthetic transformations (skill) 5. contrast the use of catalysts in bulk and pharmaceutical industry (comprehension) |

Entreevoorwaarden | This course assumes knowledge obtain from first year courses, specifically General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry 1, Molecules, Structure, Reactivity and Function, and Introduction to Process and Product Technology. This course provides basic knowledge on organic chemistry from an industrial perspective. The course contains the following subjects: 1. feedstocks, major intermediates and processes in the chemical industry 2. properties and characteristics of important functional groups 3. important functional group transformations 4. reaction mechanisms and underlying theory 5. basic principles of catalysis and how it is applied |

Opmerkingen | Written exam: Open questions. Assignment: Literature assignment with a small report (1-2 A4) 90% Exam, 10% assignment. A overall averaged mark higher than 5.5 needs to be obtained. There are no specific minimum criteria for the specific assessed parts. Up to 10% bonus can be obtained from additional weekly homework assignments. Grade for the assignment can be carried over to the next year. |
