Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) formulate a comprehensive overview of a variety of research fields of biotechnology 2) explain which new molecular biology tools have recently been developed and applied in biotechnology and how they work 3) apply knowledge of the main molecular biotechnological techniques 4) explain the challenges associated in developing a new biotechnological process 5) describe a number of production processes in red/white/green biotechnology 6) explain how new findings and processes in biotechnology can be protected by patent applications |

Omschrijving | In this course, the student will learn the molecular basis of biotechnological tools and processes that are being developed and used in research and industrial applications. The course is designed for 3rd year bachelor Biology and/or Life Science & Technology students and is based on an integrated approach, with several practical examples illustrating the whole process of development from an idea to a biotechnological process or product. The course focuses on biotechnology in the Green, Red and White Biotech industry areas (total of 28 lectures). Except for lectures on biotechnological tools and approaches in research, there will be a number of lectures on application aspects, partially by lecturers from companies. In addition, by visiting two biotechnology-oriented companies, a better view on research and development in the biotechnological industry will be obtained. The students will also learn how intellectual property (IP) can be protected by patent applications and other measures. |

Opmerkingen | Presence is mandatory for the lecture on IP and at the excursions to the biotech companies. The attendance will be monitored. No attendance has as consequence that the student is not allowed to do the exam. Based on the excursions and/or literature, students will need to an oral presentation. The presentation will not be graded but should of sufficient level (otherwise needs to be redone). Max. capacity: 60 students. |
