Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) to describe the characteristics of large-scale terrestrial and marine ecosystems. 2) to describe how abiotic and biotic factors shape and set limits to these ecosystems and the organisms that live in them. 3) to describe how plants and marine algae adjust physiologically and morphologically to their physical and chemical environment. 4) to describe which factors determine the element cycles and energy flows through the different ecosystem compartments. 5) describe how individual organisms can adapt their physiology to a variety of contrasting environmental conditions, and discuss which processes are important. 6) to identify ecological phenomena outside, and formulate ecological questions. To discuss and evaluate the usefulness of different questions, and formulate hypotheses to evaluate alternatives. To design a schedule of data collection to test these hypotheses. 7) Learning objectives skills: - to measure in the field the physical and chemical condition of the soil - to collect ecological field data, define a relevant question with the data, analyse the data and present and discuss this. - to critically evaluate scientific literature, and discuss why the results are important, and explain why the presented results do or do not proof the hypotheses posed. |

Omschrijving | Systems ecology/ Ecological interactions covers the different scales of processes in ecological systems: System Ecology is focused on the large scale units the biomes, and studies the interaction between organisms and their physical environment in an integrated manner. It introduces the different ecosystems that occur in the oceans and on the continents. The characteristics of these systems are determined by the interaction between the physical and chemical environment and the organisms that have adapted to it. Interactions take place at different scales in time and space and have consequences for the element cycles and energy flows through the different ecosystem compartments. Knowledge and insight: Understanding processes that can explain the patterns in distribution and numbers. Understanding of eco- physiological adaptation to the environment as well as population-dynamic aspects, of the role that interactions between species play and how they affect the community of life. |

Entreevoorwaarden | Participation in Systems Ecology & Ecological Interactions 1 is a compulsory entrance condition in order to follow Systems Ecology & Ecological Interactions 2. Please contact the course coordinator if you have to resit the old curriculum course unit "Systeemecologie". An exception will be made for you if this is the case. PLEASE NOTE Biology and Life Science & Technology (old curriculum) course units are only accessible for students of those degree programmes. Students from other degree programmes who would like to participate in Biology course units are obliged to contact one of the academic advisors before registration. After this contact, students have to request admission from the Board of Examiners Biology/Life Science & Technology. Failing to follow this procedure results in immediate unenrollment without prior notification. |

Opmerkingen | Presence during practicals is mandatory. If only a small part of the practical is missed an alternative assignment can be given. If more than two modules (of 4 hours) a ‘fail’ will be given. When you need to follow the old curriculum course unit "Systems Ecology", please follow Systems Ecology & Ecological Interactions 1 When you need to follow the old curriculum course unit "Ecological Interactions", please follow Systems Ecology & Ecological Interactions 2 (see also "entrance conditions") Capacity: 60 students Major students take priority over minor students in case the capacity is exceeded. In this case, minor students might not be able to participate in the excursion to Schiermonnikoog as there are only limited spots available at Schiermonnikoog. |
