Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Outline and explain fundamental immunological mechanisms required for combating infections
2) Outline and explain immunological mechanisms underlying development of immune mediated diseases including
autoimmune disease, asthma and allergies, transplant rejection and cancer.
3) Correctly apply antibody based immunological techniques in research and diagnosis of immune-mediated diseases
Omschrijving The immune system is critical for combating infectious diseases, and its activity can be exploited for the treatment of numerous
diseases, including cancer. Dysregulated activity of the immune system lies at the heart of the pathogenesis of numerous diseases,
including auto-immune disorders, allergy, asthma, and cancer. Our insight into the immunological basis of these diseases and the
possibilities for rational design of innovative therapeutic strategies for their prevention or treatment is progressing at a rapid pace.
In this course, students will obtain basic theoretical knowledge regarding fundamental immunological mechanisms to combat
infections and their role in immune-mediated diseases. In addition, students will obtain theoretical knowledge regarding
immunological techniques and methods to analyse immune responses and how these can be applied for research, diagnostic and
therapeutic purposes. This knowledge will be imparted by overview lectures given by expert principal investigators of the UMCG and
the RUG. During the practicals, students will become familiar with the execution and application of antibody-based immunological
techniques including immunohistochemistry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and flow cytometry.
