Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) To describe, discuss and distinguish models of carcinogenesis. 2) To describe, discuss and distinguish molecular pathways in different cancer types and how these pathways can be targeted. 3) To describe, analyse and evaluate regulation of these pathways at an (epi) genetic level. 4) To describe, discuss and distinguish mechanisms of action of classic chemotherapeutic drugs and novel targeted drugs and to integrate this knowledge to choose relevant preclinical models 5) Use publicly available data to investigate oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes and be able to compare their function in normal and tumor tissue and select therapeutic strategies 6) To create a poster and defend the content. 7) To assess posters and to evaluate quality of posters and the presentation 8) To assess and compare co-workers within their own poster group |

Omschrijving | During this course we will discuss in the lectures: carcinogenesis, cancer stem cells, the role of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, the large variety of subtypes within hematological and solid tumors, the signaling pathways active in different tumor types, genetic regulation of these molecular pathways (epigenetics, miRNA), DNA damage response, the tumormicroenvironment , the process of metastasis, tumor immunology, therapeutic strategies to inhibit tumor growth, development of cancer drugs, development of clinically relevant cancer models, and clinical cancer research. Each student will investigate the consequence of a specific mutation in a tumor suppressor gene or oncogene using publicly available databases. In addition, a group of 4-5 students will investigate an interesting oncogene or tumor suppressor gene using publicly available databases. Normal function of the gene of interest, its role in cancer, in which cancer type the gene plays a role, which mutations are found in this cancer gene and how we can use this knowledge for treatment strategies. Results are presented during a poster session. |

Meerkeuze toets (MC), Presentatie (P)
(MC: 70%, P: 30%. Multiple choice examen 5 or higher (70%), poster and presentation 5 or higher (30%). Total 5.5 or higher. Poster mark is based upon supervisor (50%), two poster groups and their supervisor (25% + 25%), and a sufficient mark on the mutated gene analysis. Judgement of other group members can result in +1 or -1 point of the average mark for a poster group.) |

Entreevoorwaarden | Prior knowledge: Basic Cell and Molecular Biology PLEASE NOTE Students from other degree programmes than Biology and/or Life Science & Technology who would like to participate in this course unit are obliged to contact one of the academic advisors of the BSc. Biology before enrolling in this course in order to check whether they have meet de entrance requirements. After this contact, students also have to request admission from the Board of Examiners Biology/Life Science & Technology. Failing to follow this entire procedure before the official enrollment deadline, results in immediate unenrollment without prior notification. Students from the Bachelor's degree programmes Biology and Life Science & Technology take priority over students from other degree programmes when the course has a maximum capacity. |

Opmerkingen | Guest lecturers: Dr. Rudolf Fehrmann, Dr. Bea Wisman, Prof. Anke van den Berg, Prof. Klaas Poelstra First lecture and introduction poster activity are mandatory. Students have to report and explain their absence, otherwise they are not being registered as participant. This will allow other students to gain access to the course. Poster presentation is mandatory. Absence without notification: no mark. With notification, students have to present the poster at another time. Maximum capacity: 100 students |
