Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student has knowledge about and is able to:

1. critically read and analyze scientific articles and indicate the main aims and conclusions.
2. formulate, on the basis of information from scientific articles, their motivated conclusions.
3. write an essay based on a number of scientific articles using provided guidelines.
4. provide a strong peer-review on other students’ essays focusing on content, language and structure.
5. receive critical feedback and improve their essay on the basis of received comments.
6. give a clear and interesting presentation on a scientific topic.
7. write and provide peer-reviews on scientific articles interesting and understandable for a lay public as published in newspapers.
Omschrijving The student choses a scientific research question related to his/her minor and selects 3 recent scientific publications related to that research question. This selection of research papers is sent for approval to one of the teachers and subsequently the student writes a scientific essay using 1500 words max.
Using a peer-review procedure the student provides and receives critical feedback on the written essay and uses this feedback to improve the quality of his/her essay. The student also receives a training on how to professionally present scientific data which will be practiced on a student conference at the end of the course. Furthermore, the student will receive a training in how to write items for high-quality newspapers science sections and write a newspaper science section together with other students.

(The student will be graded for their scientific essay (1/3), the presentation during the student conference at the end of the course (both on scientific content and quality of the presentation) (1/3), and on contribution to and collaborate in the science section for a newspaper (1/3). A pass-grade is 5.5 or higher. In case of a fail, the student has to revise the insufficient writing task or to redo the presentation.)

Entreevoorwaarden No entrance requirements. The course assumes general pre-knowledge in communication skills (reading, writing and presenting) from year 1 and 2 of the bachelor programmes Biology and/or Life Science & Technology.
Opmerkingen This course is compulsory for students who follow a minor programme within the life sciences.
This course is not open to students who are following a degree programme other than Biology and/or Life Science & Technology.

All lectures are mandatory. Tutorials and workshops are also mandatory. When tutorials or workshops are missed without approval at forehand, students fail their assignment and will need to redo this part of the course.
