Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- Safely work with (recombinant) bacteria (ML-I level)
- Grow and enrich cells on selective media
- Determine the activity of metabolic enzymes, using spectroscopic assays
- Use a phase-contrast microscope to phenotypically characterize microorganisms
- Report the experimental methods and data
- Apply theoretical concepts in microbial physiology and ecology to carry out basic microbiology experiments
Omschrijving Practical:

- SMT, including safety measures for working with microorganisms; sterile handling of cells; use of antibiotics
Cultivation of cells, including setting up of enrichment cultures; growth in liquid cultures and on solid media, determine growth
speed and doubling time in batch culture
- Microscopy and analytical methods, use of phase-contrast microscope; cell counting and serial dilutions; identification of bacteria
by phenotypic and genotypic methods
- Activity assays, including measurements of the catalytic activity of enzymes

Experiments will involve SMT & General Microbiological techniques, but will also be linked to the various majors (Molecular Life
Sciences, Ecology & Evolution and Medical Biology). Whenever possible, practical data will also be analysed by Biostatistical methods.

Entreevoorwaarden The practical is linked to the theoretical Microbiology course, and assumes a basic understanding of the concepts in microbial physiology and ecology taught in that course.

PLEASE NOTE
This course unit is only accessible to students enrolled in the Bachelor's programmes Biology or old curriculum Life Science & Technology. Students following other degree programmes cannot follow this course unit and will be unenrolled in Progress.
Opmerkingen Practical activities require that the students are present during the times allocated to the practical and that they carry out the experiments as planned. In case of absence without prior permission and without a demonstrable valid reason, the practical cannot be completed.

Students that get an insufficient grade on "Evaluation of the experimental skills" will need to redo the entire course in the next study year. Students
that fail on (one of) the other three elements are offered an opportunity to correct the(se) element(s) in the current course or the next course.
