Behavioural Biology

Faculteit Science and Engineering
Jaar 2020/21
Vakcode WBBY013-05
Vaknaam Behavioural Biology
Niveau(s) bachelor
Voertaal Engels
Periode semester I b

Uitgebreide vaknaam Behavioural Biology
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Student can formulate functional and mechanistic questions with regard to behaviour.
2) Student can explain how the existence of trade-offs can explain behavioural variation - also in a new context.
3) Student can give examples of the use of information from other disciplines to answer mechanistic questions regarding
4) Student has acquired specific knowledge with regard to selected behavioural biological subjects.
5) Student has a critical attitude towards research results including professional literature.
Omschrijving The aim of the course is to provide a theoretical and conceptual basis for a good understanding of the most important questions
and methods in behavioural biology. Attention is paid to mechanisms (how?) as well as function and evolution (why?) of behaviour,
and to the integration of both perspectives. Topics include: the evolution of behaviour, sexual selection, development of behaviour,
foraging behaviour, communication and cognition.

Biology and Life Science & Technology (old curriculum) course units are only accessible for students of those degree programmes. Students from other degree programmes who would like to participate in Biology course units are obliged to contact one of the academic advisors before registration. After this contact, students have to request admission from the Board of Examiners Biology/Life Science & Technology. Failing to follow this procedure results in immediate unenrollment without prior notification.
