Leerdoelen | Learning goals Learning outcome at the theoretical level: the student obtains knowledge of: 1. The functioning and the neuroanatomy of the brain 2. The underlying molecular and biochemical pathways 3. Sensory systems: receptor and sensory organs 4. The autonomic nervous system and homeostasis 5. Neurohormonal processes in brain and periphery 6. Brain control over food intake and reproduction 7. The biological clock and the function of sleep 8. Learning and memory 9. Reward and addiction Learning outcomes at the ,odule level: the student has the ability: - to read, evaluate and discuss scientific literature in brain research - to participate in research in (neuro)physiology and neuroanatomy. - to combine neuroscience with other scientific disciplines such as medicine and psychology. - to present and discuss a critical perspective in neuroscience in public - to write an opinion paper about a topic related to neuroscience |

Omschrijving | This 15 EC minor course is an introduction in the field of Neurosciences. It contains lectures, practicals and special assignments covering a broad field of functional neuroscience. The lectures and practical courses are mainly taught by lecturers from the Neuobiology section of the research institute GELIFES (Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences). The lectures focus on a selection of the most important principles in neuroscience with special emphasis on the underlying mechanisms in the neurobiology and physiology of behaviour. The theoretical part is assessed in two partial examinations. The lectures are accompanied by a series of practicals focusing on topics such as the functional anatomy of the brain, control of the autonomic nervous system (the baroreceptor reflex), neural stimulation of skeletal muscle and a computer-assisted experiment on the effect of antidepressive drugs treatment during pregnancy. Masterclasses from guests lecturers from other disciplines (medicine, neurolinguistics and psychology) form the basis of project based learning activity therafter and in the final week of the course the students will participate in a public debate on hot topics on the crossroads of neuroscience and society | ||||||||

Opmerkingen | THE MINOR NEUROSCIENCE HAS REACHED ITS MAXIMUM CAPACITY FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-2021. ENROLLMENT IS ONLY POSSIBLE FOR THE WAITING LIST. STUDENTS FROM OTHER UNIVERSITIES (OTHER THAN UG) CAN NO LONGER ENROLL FOR THE MINOR. Students from Medicine or Movement Sciences are welcome but the content of the first partial examination (neuroanatomy, physiology) will significantly overlap with their study.
