Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Describe the three-dimensional structure of macromolecules (i.e. proteins and nucleic acids) and explain the forces keeping these structures together;
2. Predict the general properties (and functions) of macromolecules based on their three-dimensional structure;
3. Explain the principles and limitations of fragment based design and virtual screening;
4. Calculate affinity and fraction of saturation for a given reaction and evaluate the strength of interactions;
5. Select the appropriate technique to study drug-protein interaction.
Omschrijving In this course students will get an overview of techniques used for structural characterization and analysis of protein-drug interactions. This will be preceded with an overview of general principles of organization of proteins and nucleic acids.
Topics will include structures of proteins (soluble and membrane-embedded) from the drug development point of view; basic principles of drug-protein interactions; biophysical methods to characterize drug-protein complex formation (X-ray crystallography, cryo-Electron Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), and an introduction into fragment based drug design and virtual screening.

Entreevoorwaarden Basic knowledge of structures, chemical properties, and roles of the most important classes of biomolecules: DNA, RNA, and proteins acquired from ‘Molecules of Life’ and ‘Biochemistry’ courses.

Biology and Life Science & Technology (old curriculum) course units are only accessible for students of those degree programmes. Students from other degree programmes who would like to participate in Biology course units are obliged to contact one of the academic advisors before registration. After this contact, students have to request admission from the Board of Examiners Biology/Life Science & Technology. Opmerkingen Tutorials and a seminar are mandatory. The seminar is a mock examination. Tutorials are computer-based, where visualising the structures enables a deeper understanding of principles of structural organization of proteins and nucleic acids
