Leerdoelen 1. Find, use and mine international biological databases
2. Use general bioinformatics tools for performing sequence alignments, for building phylogenetic trees, and for studying molecular evolution
3. Perform gene predictions, determine exons/introns, analyze genome maps and identify genome elements
4. Interpret and evaluate genetic variation and complex genetic diseases
5. Examine the results by coupling the data to biological knowledge using literature data
6. Evaluate problems, progress and results with the other course students, teaching assistants and teachers
Omschrijving This course presents an introduction to bioinformatics, to bioinformatics tools and databases. The databases used in the course are those in which genomes, genes, mRNAs, proteins, protein patterns, gene variants and gene/protein expression are stored. The bioinformatics tools will be used to perform sequence alignments, create phylogenetic trees, predict genes/exons/introns, metagenomics, and to model biological processes on the basis of -omics datasets. Furthermore, databases will be used to study genetic variation and complex diseases.
