Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) handle the equipment needed for a simple physics experiment 2) perform a simple physics experiment and process the measurement data 3) analyse the data and the errors involved 4) keep a laboratory journal 5) interpret large datasets in a scientific context 6) present the present the results in a scientific report including proper tables and graphs |

Omschrijving | The course unit aims at teaching students • the elementary aspects of performing physics-type experiments; • how to analyze the data, including error analysis and evaluation of the statistical significance; • how to report the results in a scientific way. In addition to a theoretical background in these topics, the students receive hands-on experience in: • performing measurements in an optics experiment; • (computer) processing of experimental data in a biomaterials context. The course is integrated with the 2-ECTS course unit `Ethics 1: Philosophy of Science & Scientific Integrity' in order to put the practice of scientific investigations in the perspective of responsible conduct of research. |
