Leerdoelen At the end of this course, the student is able to:
- know the anatomy of the brain including the global functions of the different brain areas
- have insight into the mechanics of different methods for analyzing brain data: EEG and fMRI and knowing how to critically interpret those
- know how big data methods can be used to study brain activity (e.g., MVPA)
- have an overview of the state of the art on the role of single neurons in cognitive functions
- know the different ways in which brain connectivity is measured and interpreted (including the functional roles of different large-scale networks such as the default mode network)
Omschrijving Course Objectives
The main aim of this course is to know at what levels brain activity can be studied, and to be able to critically evaluate research in this area. Specifically, by the end of the course, the student has the following skills:
- Knowing the anatomy of the brain including the global functions of the different brain areas
- Having an insight into the mechanics of different methods for analyzing brain data: EEG and fMRI and knowing how to critically interpret those
- Knowing how big data methods can be used to study brain activity (e.g., MVPA)
- Having an overview of the state of the art on the role of single neurons in cognitive functions
- Knowing the different ways in which brain connectivity is measured and interpreted (including the functional roles of different large-scale networks such as the default mode network)

Teaching method
This course will be taught as a learning community with weekly 1 hour of lecture and working groups. During the working groups, students watch some material, and then discuss that or work with it in other ways. At the end of the course, students produce a cartoon or comic strip about the brain as an end product and write a critical reflection about a popular press article or research article on the brain.
