Omschrijving  This course deals with two intertwined topics: classical mechanics and special relativity.  Following the notion of inertial frames of reference, the theory of relativity is developed in the first 16 lectures. The topics covered include: principle of relativity, synchronization of clocks, the nature of time, the metric equation, proper time, coordinate transformations, Lorentz contraction, cosmic speed limit, and conservation of fourmomentum. During 16 hours of tutorials the student is trained in analyzing, reformulating in terms of events and solving special relativity problems both graphically and algebraically.  The next 16 hours are devoted to classical mechanics in vectorial form. Starting from kinematics, Newton’s laws are presented and applied to the twodimensional motion of a particle. Simple harmonic oscillators are discussed as an example. Additional central concepts such as work, kinetic energy, potential energy, momentum and fictitious forces (centrifugal and Coriolis) are developed and, in 16 hours of tutorials, applied to solve one and twodimensional problems.
