Leerdoelen  Upon completing this course you will be able to  solve systems of linear equations using methods such as GaussJordan elimination and interpret the solutions of homogenous systems  perform matrix operations including addition, multiplication, transposition and inversion and recognize the use of matrix operations in linear transformations  calculate the determinant of a matrix and apply Cramer’s rule to solve systems of linear equations  demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts including vectors, subspaces, vector spaces, linear independence, and span  determine the dimension and base of a finitedimensional vector space and show the connections between basis of two vector spaces  find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix and compute its diagonalization  demonstrate an understanding of the concepts including inner product, length and orthogonality and orthogonalize vectors using GramSchmidt process  transfer the theory developed in the lectures to computer applications using MATLAB  develop problem solving skills to quantitatively analyse the problems and their solutions arising in physical, life and social sciences areas 

Omschrijving  This course is an introduction to linear algebra, one of the most exciting and applicable branches of mathematics. The topics will be covered are systems of linear equations, matrices, vector spaces, determinants, linear transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and orthogonality. Many mathematical problems encountered in business or sciences involve solving a system of linear equations. For example Google uses linear systems with billions of unknowns to search effectively, while Netflix algorithm tries to give us accurate recommendations with the use of linear algebra. The main goal of this course is to establish connections between the mathematical theory and other disciplines. We aim to achieve this by solving reallife problems in areas such as business, economics, demography, genetics, computer science, data analytics and physics. Working with data sets is important to gain more insight on realworld phenomena. The advancements in technology let us to perform computations very quickly. Since the software package MATLAB was developed specifically for matrix operations, we will be using MATLAB to apply the methods of linear algebra to the computer projects with large data sets.
