Uitgebreide vaknaam | Exploring Challenges of Modern Society: Systemic | ||||||||
Leerdoelen | |||||||||
Omschrijving | The Systems Track approaches the Challenges – and Opportunities – of Modern Society from a Systems Theory point of view. We do not approach these challenges as isolated problems, but as essentially interconnected. Einstein’s remark “You cannot solve problems with the mindset that created them” will be a guiding principle. In this course you will learn how to approach the world as interconnected systems and while doing that you will discover that the causes and defining structures of many of the challenges of our time are actually quite similar: a mismatch between how reality really is and how it appears or is understood. And more importantly, typically these challenges can be addressed with other mindsets than that created them. Thinking about mindsets – your’s and other’s – will be an important and enlightening activity. The course focuses on self-directed exploration of interesting topics and the construction of new knowledge and insights by combining different knowledge sources and perspectives. Each week has a different week theme such as systems, food systems, war, truth, money, to wisdom. Each week starts with a preparatory assignment, which is typically centered on a documentary, interview, presentation, podcast, or movie about the week theme. Monday afternoon you engage in self-directed research that must lead to a short, yet interesting, pitch on a relevant topic of your choice. The Monday sessions ends in the formation of subgroups (of 1 to 4 students) that make an infographic on the topic of one or a combination of pitches. The infographic should focus on key facts in combination with the relations, processes, and dynamics that explain or describe a topic of your choice. You have to indicate which knowledge you constructed while making the infographic and why you made your design choices. Wednesday morning we address theory and applications of systems theory. On Friday you hand in, as a group, your infographic about the week theme. Friday afternoon we have different activities: from learning to make and present infographics, via information markets on a complex theme, to class-wide battles and planning the future. |
