Leerdoelen   apply the concept of functions to real life applications by constructing models that use linear and nonlinear (quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and logistic) functions.  interpret the concept of the derivative with limits and compute it for different types of functions numerically, graphically and symbolically.  develop problem solving skills by quantitatively analyzing the problems and their solutions arising in business, social sciences and life sciences areas with fellow students  use appropriate tools such as product rule and chain rule for computing derivatives without calculating the limits.  locate and sketch some of the important features of a graph in optimization problems.  compute the definite and indefinite integrals numerically, graphically and symbolically and apply separation of variables method to solve the real life problems including differential equations  construct systems of linear equations for reallife problems and solve them by using matrix operations.  analyze the linear programming problems to find the largest or smallest possible value of some quantity under certain constraints. 

Omschrijving  Mathematics for Social Sciences is one of modules of the Research and Methodology: Year 1 course. This module provides an introduction to the mathematical subjects those are used in analyzing the problems arising in the social and life sciences. The module starts with finite mathematics subjects that include linear and nonlinear functions, matrix algebra and linear programming. The second half of the module is aimed at introducing the applications of calculus in business, life sciences, and social sciences. The key concepts of calculus: derivative and integration of functions and their applications in real life problems are covered.
